Coastal Home - Design Elements
What Is Coastal Style?
Eternally popular, coastal style sets most of us dreaming of seaside getaways and, by following our pointers below, it's easy to bring the beachy-chic look home. Just pair watery hues with natural textures, like rope, driftwood or wicker, and mix in a few nautical touches like anchors, oars or shells. Whether you live by the sea or miles from the nearest body of water, incorporating just a few beachy decor touches can give any space a cool, coastal vibe.
Nautical items like brass ship bells, captain's wheels, colourful signal flags or boat oars are a common (and fun!) feature of the coastal style and when hung on the wall, they're a great stand-in for standard art.
Creating a coastal interior style, there are certain design elements that you need to include to create a coastal look and feel.
We will look at texture, patterns and accent pieces.
Textures
Texture is the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or substance — smooth, rough, fuzzy, that you use when you are creating a specific look or style, for example rattan chairs, jute rugs or raw timber finishes are perfect for a coastal home.
Patterns
Each style has very specific patterns or elements that make a style unique. With coastal, think about the items that you will see at the beach, for example, shells, beach umbrellas, sea stars, waves, sun hats, boats, anchors, boat steering wheels, drift wood, palm trees, coconuts etc.
Even though these patterns can be incorporated to create this style, only introduce it into small, thoughtful quantities, you don't want to fill your home with anchors and shells.
Coastal is always calm and relaxed and therefore be careful not to incorporate too many accent colours in your furniture and patterns.
You can incorporate these items in patterns or as accessories to create a coastal space.
Accent pieces
Think about how you feel when you are at the beach and on holiday. You are relaxed with comfortable furniture that is neutral in colour or hues of blues and whites and possibly made of raw timber or rattan. Rattan light fittings and jute rugs.
I don't suggest incorporating dark timber furniture. Your coastal interiors should be fresh and play on natural light and the feeling of openness.
I suggest sticking a neutral base using natural colours and blues. A good idea is to incorporate some greenery, especially palms which will work beautifully with this style. What is the feeling that you want to create in this space is what you need to keep in mind.
